Our Culture: Progressing or Digressing?

One of my nieces, who is currently completing her R.N. program, recently shared with me one of her experiences in a secular university.

In one class, she was asked to rate a list of sexual activities and preferences on a scale of most acceptable (adaptive) to least acceptable (mal-adaptive). This list included the following sexual activities: Rape; Incest; Homosexuality; Unsatisfactory sex inside marriage; Satisfactory sex between unmarried people; Exhibitionism; Pedophilia; Numerous casual sex encounters between young adults; Bi-sexuality; Sex without informing partners of your HIV status; Masturbation; Extramarital affairs.

They were asked to place three in the category of most acceptable (adaptive) and three in the category of least acceptable (mal-adaptive).

My niece, who was raised in a strong Christian home and attended a Christian school that gave her a very well developed biblical worldview, stated to her peers that she didn’t see any of these as most acceptable. In reality, all of the choices were in some way a perversion of God’s design for sex inside marriage. It was also interesting that they only listed sex inside marriage as “unsatisfactory.” When my niece, for lack of better choices, chose this one as the only somewhat acceptable option, her classmates were dumbfounded. They asked, “Why would you choose ‘unsatisfactory sex inside marriage’ as your best option?”

At the close of the lesson, the teacher stated that there are no right and wrong answers on this exercise and only two activities, rape and pedophilia, were listed by every student as unacceptable.

My niece made the case to her class that many years ago all of these would have been considered wrong. She then asked the class how much longer it would be before they decided that rape and pedophilia are okay. After this statement, the teacher said something very revealing. She said, “Well, it depends on whether you think we are progressing or digressing.” It was clear that she believed the acceptance of sexual perversion is a sign of progress in our culture.

This classroom experience clearly shows the great divide between those of us who possess a biblical worldview and those who possess a secular worldview. One side thinks we are progressing, and we as Christians know that we are digressing from the absolute standards God established for our good.

Almost all of the students in my niece’s class agreed with the teacher.

How many more experiences like this one will it take before we realize that education is being used to rob the hearts and minds of America’s children of the truth?

How much longer will Christian pastors and parents defend the secular indoctrination of their children?

The statistics are in, and we have lost an entire generation of young people to secularism. In Thom Ranier’s book, The Millennials, only a fraction (6%) of the 78 million born from 1980-2000 believe in the cardinal truths of Christianity. This is no coincidence! 90 – 95% of these young people were trained in secular schools.

If we want to save the next generation, we must gain access to their hearts and minds while they are still young. Many wonderful ministries are trying to win the millennials to Christ as young adults. This is a great and necessary mission, but we would be much more successful if we focus on their education as children.

We are praying for an awakening in the area of K-12 education. We must realize that K-12 secular education is aggressively seeking to give our children a non-Christian worldview. It is imperative that we create a new K-12 educational movement totally dedicated to giving children a biblical worldview.

Will you join with us in reaching this generation for Christ? Our nation’s well-being and our children’s eternal futures depend on it.
