Larry Daugherty

Larry DaughtertyLarry was born in rural West Virginia. At the age of 10, his dad moved the family of four to California where Larry grew up on the San Francisco peninsula. Following high school, he attended junior college before transferring to San Jose State University. With a zeal for sports and a love of kids, he began studying toward a career as a physical education teacher and coach. God was using that interest to position him for the future. Drafted in 1966, he spent the next five years in the Army serving primarily as a helicopter pilot while earning the rank of Captain.

God used Larry’s wife, Marilyn, and a long-time friend to introduce him to Christian education at Fremont Christian School. FCS, founded in 1968 as a K-6 school, was adding one grade level each year. Coinciding with their arrival (Marilyn was also hired as a teacher) in 1972, the school was starting its first year of high school. Appointed as secondary principal for the following year, Larry began his administrative career. To improve professionally, he eventually earned his Ed.D. in private school administration at the University of San Francisco.

It was an exciting, eventful time experiencing God’s provision of some fabulous teachers, finances, and an exponentially growing student body. From a small fledging school of about 100 students, FCS had over 1,200 students enrolled in PS-12 when Larry, now Superintendent, left in 1994 for Shawnee, KS. There, he assumed the Superintendent position at Maranatha Academy for the next 18 years. While there, he was privileged to co-found the Great Plains Alliance of Christian Schools and participate in the Kansas Association of Independent & Religious Schools. He was honored as an inductee into the KAIRS Hall of Fame in 2012. The last two years, Larry has served as interim superintendent for two different Kansas City urban Christian schools. Larry also served on the board of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) for 10 years.

In addition to his service to Renewanation, Larry volunteers with House of Hope Kansas City as board chairman and with the Shawnee Rotary Club. Larry and Marilyn reside in Lenexa, KS and attend Antioch Church.
